Robin Layne & the Rhythm Makers

With roots in rhythmic traditions around the globe, this groove heavy ensemble delivers music that transcends the bounds of tradition, blurring the lines between jazz and folk as they carve out new territory for the marimba at the forefront of the sonic landscape.

Over the past decade and a half, percussionist Robin Layne has steeped himself in rhythmic traditions around the world from Cuba to West Africa to Mexico and beyond. He brings these influences to bear in his compositions that are inspired by his travels. Robin has worked with many of Canada's finest global artists and toured throughout China, Europe, Mexico, USA and Canada. Highlights include Nanjing Jazz Festival, Hildesheim Jazz Festival, Victoria Jazz Fest, Arts Wells Festival, Vancouver Island MusicFest, Salmon Arm Roots and Blues, Vancouver Folk Festival, and the Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

The Rhythm Makers are renowned percussionist Liam MacDonald, bassist Derek DiFilippo, drummer Daniel Ruiz and Malcolm Aiken on trumpet and EFX. Collectively these musicians have played with everyone from David Hidalgo to the Hamiltones, and have an on stage chemistry that is a joy to witness.

Champagne Sunday

Husband and wife members Jessi and Jared Fredeen tear up stages and crowds nationwide with their unique upbeat, roller coaster style shows, firing off gypsy-punk rock songs alongside everything from intimate tear-jerkers to anthemic foot-stompers, peppering their sets with compelling stories behind their music. Champagne Sunday is one of the rare original acts that performs with stadium-level energy, regardless of whether it’s for a festival crowd, a club, a group of coffee shop patrons, or house concert attendees. Together, Jessi and Jared have been able to create a sound that’s totally unique, fun, emotional, and captivating, with a show that packs the power of an entire orchestra. This act has a ton of showmanship, heart, and talent that makes for a powerful experience.

String Fever

String Fever is a truly original show featuring five and six stringed electric violins, called violectras, a viola, and a cello. Some of the unique features of the show include String Fever’s acclaimed version of “Bolero,” with all four members of the group playing one cello at the same time. At one point, the audience is challenged to a rousing game of name that tune, trying to guess 20 of the most popular film theme songs, including a rousing rendition of a “007, James Bond medley.”

The fantastic culmination of the show is the group’s signature finale, “The History of Music . . . in 5 minutes.” The unique instruments and charismatic personalities of the members of the group make String Fever a truly unique and unforgettable, not to miss, musical experience.
